Established in 2010 as Capital Homes LLC, we spent the first seven years specializing in residential remodeling and custom single-family homes. From the beginning, our mission has been to deliver lower-volume, higher-quality homes that set us apart from the competition.

In 2023, we rebranded as Cutler Construction Company, expanding our expertise to include historic tax credit projects, commercial and multifamily construction, and the restoration of old commercial properties. While our scope has grown, we continue to build 1-3 custom homes per year, maintaining our commitment to craftsmanship and personalized service.

Our Team

We are a small team of five, supported by a trusted network of subcontractors who have worked with us for over a decade. This long-standing collaboration allows us to remain competitive in single-family residential construction while also bringing the expertise and sophistication needed to tackle multifamily, commercial, and mixed-use projects.

Pete Cutler

Founder + Owner

A Des Moines native, Peter Cutler grew up in West Des Moines and graduated from Valley High School. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Engineering from Iowa State University and co-founded Capital Homes, LLC in 2010 with his friend Barrett Boesen. After Barrett’s passing in 2015, Peter continued to grow and evolve the company, eventually rebranding it to Cutler Construction Company.

Peter lives in Des Moines with his wife Kiley and their two children, with a third on the way. In his free time, Peter enjoys traveling with his family, rock climbing, fishing, and riding bicycles.

Joe Pierce

Project Manager

Born on a German Army base, Joe Pierce moved frequently throughout the U.S. and Germany before settling in Oahu, Hawaii, as a teenager. While working summer jobs during high school, he discovered his passion for construction and has been honing his craft as a carpenter and business owner the past 35 years. Joe has been with Cutler Construction for the past eight years as a project manager.

Joe currently resides just outside Boone, Iowa, with his wife Kati. Together, they have six grown sons, one daughter-in-law, and four granddaughters. Joe enjoys everything outdoors, including camping, riding his one-wheel, spending time on the water, and being with his family.

Bernie Saggau

Project Manager

A West Des Moines native, Bernie Saggau graduated from Valley High School in 2012 and studied Spanish and Business at the University of Iowa. After graduation, Bernie joined Cutler Construction as a carpenter and apprentice, while also managing rental properties. After years of balancing both, he decided to shift his focus away from property management. Initially, Bernie spent summers in Massachusetts guiding river trips and worked with Cutler Construction in the off-season. In the spring of 2024, Bernie decided to fully commit to Cutler Construction, becoming a project manager with the team.

Bernie has now settled back in West Des Moines, but he still finds time for fly fishing, especially in Northeast Iowa.

Evan Hartig

Project Manager

Evan Hartig grew up in Dubuque, Iowa, and attended Wahlert High School. He then went on to study English at Lindenwood University in St. Louis, where he won a 2017 National Championship in road cycling. After retiring from professional cycling in 2019, Evan returned to Iowa, working as a construction accounting analyst before enrolling in DMACC's construction management program. After connecting with Pete Cutler via the local biking community, he eventually joined Cutler Construction as a project manager.

In his free time, Evan enjoys mountain biking, skiing, rock climbing, hiking, and spending time with his fiancée and two dogs.

Matt Zimmer

Financial Controller

Matt Zimmer joined Cutler Construction as a Financial Controller in 2023, bringing three years of construction accounting experience to the team. Prior to his career in construction, Matt was a professional cyclist, competing as one of the top U.S. domestic racers and traveling the world for five years. His experience on the bike taught him discipline, focus, and the value of teamwork, which he now applies to his role in financial management.

Outside of work, Matt is a dedicated family man who enjoys cycling and spending time with his wife and son.
